Learn more →Western Sydney gets the worst of the storm season. Parramatta sits on the Cumberland Plain, well inside the area the Bureau regularly covers with large-hail and damaging-wind warnings through the warmer months, and the damage that follows is a consistent short list: cracked tiles, lifted ridge caps, peeled flashings, dented sheeting, and gutters that could not take the volume.
If water is coming in now, call (02) 9090 4741 and describe it.
The first visit is not about the final repair. It is about stopping the loss getting bigger while the weather is still around:
Permanent repairs follow once it is dry enough to do them properly and, if you are claiming, once the damage has been documented.
Hail is the damage event that actually turns up in this part of Sydney, and it treats materials very differently.
Aged terracotta and concrete tile crack. The older and more porous the tile, the lower the impact it takes to fracture it, which is why hail damage across Parramatta tends to concentrate on the oldest roofs. A cracked tile can look trivial from the ground and still put water onto the sarking every time it rains.
Sheet steel dents and the paint finish can be bruised, but the sheet usually stays watertight. The real steel damage is at the edges — barge and ridge flashings deformed, fixings loosened by hammering.
Whirlybirds, skylights, solar frames and vents take a disproportionate share of the damage because they stand proud of the roof plane.
Wind lifts rather than breaks. Ridge caps go first where the pointing had already cracked — which, on the reactive clay soils under this area, it very often had. Then barge capping, then flashings at parapets and wall abutments, then the tiles along a windward edge. On sheet roofs, a run of fixings that were over-driven years ago will let a sheet start flapping.
The most under-appreciated one. A short, intense downpour on a flat catchment puts a lot of water onto a roof at once. Any part of the drainage that is undersized, blocked or missing an overflow will spill, and in a house with internal box gutters it spills inward. This is why so many storm call-outs across Harris Park, North Parramatta and Granville turn out to be gutter and box gutter problems rather than roof covering problems.
If you intend to claim, the quality of the evidence matters more than most people expect. What we provide:
What we will not do is tell you a claim will be approved. That decision belongs to your insurer, and anyone promising otherwise is not being straight with you. A written roof inspection report can be ordered separately if your insurer wants an independent assessment.
Then call (02) 9090 4741 and tell us what you can see from the ground and from inside.
Once the weather clears, the permanent work is whatever the damage actually calls for:

Work is carried out by established, licensed and insured roofing contractors working to NSW Fair Trading requirements, and the completed repair carries a written workmanship warranty.
After a widespread hail event, every roofer in western Sydney is busy at the same time, and anyone promising you an immediate permanent repair in that window is promising something they cannot control. What we prioritise is make-safe, because that is what stops the damage compounding. We will tell you where you sit rather than give you a date we cannot hold.
Call (02) 9090 4741, or send the details and photos through. We cover the full Parramatta service area.
Get buckets under the drips and move what you can out of the way. If the ceiling is bulging, do not stand under it and do not poke it from below without a container ready, because a sagging plasterboard sheet can be holding a lot of water. Switch off power to any circuit near the water and stay off the roof yourself — wet tile and wet steel are both treacherous. Then call and describe what you can see.
A tarp is a make-safe, and it is a separate, smaller piece of work to the repair that follows. It is there to stop the damage getting worse while the weather is still bad and while a claim is being assessed. Insurers generally expect you to take reasonable steps to prevent further loss, so make-safe is usually the right move rather than a wasted one. The permanent repair is quoted on its own.
Hail leaves fresh, sharp-edged fractures with clean exposed material at the break, often in a pattern across one or two elevations rather than evenly over the whole roof. Age-related failure looks weathered at the break and tends to be worst where the roof is shaded and damp. Metal roofs show it as dimpling across the pans. Photographs taken close to the event are worth a great deal if you are claiming.
We can give you the evidence your insurer will ask for: dated photographs, a written description of what failed and why, and a scope of the repair. We cannot promise an outcome on your claim and we will not tell you a claim will be approved, because that decision belongs to the insurer. What we can do is make sure the damage is documented properly rather than described vaguely.
Because the failure is usually drainage, not covering. A summer storm here dumps a very high rain intensity in a few minutes onto a flat catchment. Box gutters, valleys and downpipes that cope with ordinary rain are overwhelmed, and anything without a working overflow sends the excess inside. The roof can be in perfect condition and the ceiling will still take water.
